11 Cheap and Cheerful Places to Eat in Athens, Greece

Athens has some of the best food in the world, especially when it comes to street food, this city does exceptionally.

I spent a week in Athens and for the most part I ate out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as we didn’t have a kitchen to cook in.

Although in other countries this can be expensive, Athens has so many quick and cheap street food stalls to eat from in the city centre.

So, here are some of my top recommendations for where to eat in Athens.

  1. Smak

Starting off strong, this homemade pizza place is super yummy and the restaurant has such a nice vibe to it.

You can order traditional Greek pizzas here, which are called Peynirli or you can order Italian styled pizza.

If you have a sweet tooth, you can also get sweet peynirli for dessert, which looked really good.

  1. Te Kila

If you are looking to go out for a nice dinner but are not looking for anything super fancy or expensive, then this mexican restaurant would be the perfect option.

We loved the food here, as well as this the staff were so friendly and the ambiance is amazing, and decore is gorgeous.

The portions here are a really good size, so if you are starving, this is definitely the place for you.

I am not a huge fan of mexican food but we got the loaded nachos to share and then I got chicken fajitas and it was all amazing.

3. Pax

Pax is a fast food burger joint in the city centre of Athens, which is super delicious if you are looking for something quick.

The burgers here remind me of Five Guys burgers, which I love, so this is a great place to eat if you are craving something along those lines.

  1. Local Green Organica

When you are constantly eating out, it can make you feel super sluggish and unhealthy, so this next place is prefect for if you want to get some well needed fruits and veggies in.

We went here for lunch as we were craving some healthy food and Local Green Organica did not disappoint.

The fresh salads, acai bowls and smoothies here were so delicious and really filling. This is a perfect spot for a quick lunch and a coffee.

  1. Mailos

I am such a huge pasta lover, so this little street food restaurant really won me over.

This place is a pasta bar that makes homemade pasta dishes within minutes that are served fresh and ready for takeaway.

Mailo’s really surprised me because I had never seen a pasta street food restaurant before, but I couldn’t praise this place enough it was amazing.

You pick a sauce, a pasta shape and toppings for your dish and it will be served up within minutes and it tastes so yummy and fresh.

Ireland is definitely missing a place like this because I would go back in the morning if I could.

  1. The Underdog

This restaurant is the perfect place for breakfast, it is so delicious and also very spacious if you also want to bring your laptop and get some work done while waiting on your meal.

The interior has a really cool vibe to it and the staff here were so accomodating and lovely.

I would definitely recommend giving this place a try if you are in Athens.

  1. Wokaholic

Another great street food find, this place makes up the most amazing wok bowls that are super handy for lunch or a quick and cheap dinner.

In this restaurant you can pick a noodle/rice base, your choice of meat and vegetables and your sauce of choice and they will make up a bowl for you.

I found the food here to be so nice and it is also super convenient for grabbing something on the go.

  1. Lukumades

This place sells greek donuts, which are amazing! They are an authentic greek dessert and this place is super popular for their donut balls.

You can pick sauce, toppings and/or ice cream to go with your donuts and they are to die for.

I would recommend not eating a huge dinner before having these as you would want to be hungry for them, as they are super filling.

  1. Ancho

Another really great street food restaurant, this time we had Mexican food. This place reminds me of boojum in Ireland but has a lot more option on the menu.

You can order burritos, tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas or whatever other mexican dish you are craving.

This place is also great for lunch or a quick dinner. The restaurant itself has a really nice design and they also serve beer which a lot of other street food places don’t sell.

  1.  Anana

Another great breakfast place that sells yummy and healthy dishes. The coffee in the cafe is also very nice, so even if you aren’t hungry, you can always come here for a coffee and a pastry.

We done some work as well as eat breakfast here, it is a great cafe for people who are working remotely or just have some admin to do.

11. Tylixto

This street food restaurant serves authentic greek food and we thought it was the perfect place to try some local cuisine.

It is a stall type place on a busy street, so it is best to go here during off peak hours for eating, meaning not in the middle of lunch/dinner time.

The gyros and skewers were really nice here and it was a super busy spot which seemed like a good sign.

You have to try greek food while in Greece but if you’re like me and not too adventurous and prefer a range of things to choose from, this restaurant is great.
